WENATCHEE — A couple of Wenatchee Valley residents captured River Run on the Fourth 10K titles Monday along the Wenatchee waterfront, while Selah and Mill Creek runners took home the 5K crowns.

In cooler-than-normal summer temperatures, Jacob Smith, a 22-year-old former Wenatchee High runner, won the men’s River Run 10K race in 38 minutes, 0.7 seconds, to beat East Wenatchee’s Phil Hochwalt, 34, who had a time of 38:30.8, and Wenatchee’s Chad McBride, 46, clocked in 38:33.0. Claton Belmont of Wenatchee, who won last year’s River Run 10K, was fourth in 41:01.9, even though he ran 54 seconds faster during this year’s race.

Cashmere’s Kelly Weatherman, 42, finished first in the women’s 10K in 48:25.9 to edge Winthrop’s 15-year-old Icel Sukovaty (48:28.6) by less then three

seconds. Seattle’s Heather MacMillan, 48, was third in 49:20.5.

In the men’s 5K event, teen runners claimed the top three spots. Selah’s Isaac Leavitt, 18, won the race in 18:47.3. Moses Lake’s Zachery Owens, 16, was runner-up in 19:35.3 and East Wenatchee’s Connor Weldy, 15, was third in 20:23.4.

Mill Creek’s Brooke Kingma defended her title in the women’s 5K, winning in 19:07.4. Kingma, 19, who runs for Lipscomb University in Nashville, also was the second fastest overall 5K runner on the day. Last year, she won the 5K in 18:40. Cashmere’s Kealani Paton, 21, who runs for Lewis-Clark State College, took second in 20:55.5 and Leavenworth’s Jodi Brautaset, 40, was third in 22:21.9.

It wouldn't be Fourth of July if there wasn't red, white and blue.

The 5K and 10K courses were on the Apple Capital Loop Trail adjacent to the Columbia River, with the start and finish outside Pybus Public Market. A total of 360 people registered for the RunWenatchee-produced event, which kicked off the Wenatchee Valley’s “Let’s Have a Blast” Fourth of July celebration.
